It all started when...
I was in the first grade. I learned that we could get diseases if you were missing nutrients (pellagra, I think it was). I found this revelation completely shocking and intriguing! Several science fair projects and many years later I earned my master of science with a specialty in maternal and child health from Case Western Reserve University and became a registered dietitian. For more than 20 years I have worked in variety of maternal and child health settings including outpatient clinical, WIC, and program administration. Carolina Family Nutrition, started in September 2017, is my newest venture.
My passion is helping individuals and families develop positive eating experiences and attitudes; sort nutrition fact from fiction (or exaggeration); use practical strategies to reach their well-being goals. My practice philosophy aligns with intuitive eating , eating competence, and mindful eating, which means I don't endorse calorie counting, "diet talk", or weight shaming. That isn't to say I can't help you lose weight if that is your goal, rather our focus will be on lifelong eating skills, knowledge, and attitudes over short term fixes or fads.
My practice focuses on family nutrition, because families, whether biological or chosen, are where we first learn about nutrition and to eat. As Ellyn Satter wrote in her book, Your Child's Weight, "Eating and feeding reflects people's histories. their relationships with themselves and others." While my practice focuses on nutrition for moms, dads, infants, and children, I welcome clients of any age seeking to improve their habits! I welcome ALL families (love is love). And, I welcome people of any gender identity or gender orientation.
When I am not working, I am out dancing (swing, lindy, waltz, and contra), cycling with my husband on our tandem, cooking, and spoiling my little dog Fig.
